The Jellyfish Body

Thursday, December 15, 2011

Jellyfish are very complex creatures and are difficult to understand. Though many research groups are working on jellyfish facts, but not a lot has been known about them. How does their body work- it has always been a question. Let us find out some facts about the jellyfish body.

First, let us define what a jellyfish is. This refers to underwater animals of various sizes and shapes that are known to have the ability to regenerate and prolong their life when necessary. They also have the following characteristics:

• Have tentacles
• A jelly-like umbrella
• They may belong to no-so-jellyfish species like cnidarians

Aside from this, they can only swim upwards and downwards. They need water currents to steer them. They also have a bell that can contain a ring of strong muscle which they sometimes use against strong currents.

Additional Information

Depending on the species of jellyfish, their tentacles may vary in length. Most of the jellyfish may have very short tentacles. Some may not have tentacles at all. Others may have hundreds of tentacles.
Most jellyfish have oral arms around their mouths. However, this may also be absent in other species. Another notable characteristic that is present in the animal would be the size. Most of the jellyfish are large in size.

Aside from this, they are soft to the touch and have no bones. Perhaps this is why they can easily follow the currents of the water wherever they may go. The tentacles also have stinging cells that can be used to capture their victims.

Another interesting trait that jellyfish have is that they are usually hermaphrodites. This means that they have both the male and female reproductive organs. This is why they can reproduce twice as fast because they would not need a partner to do so.

Habitat and Growth

They are usually able to live in whatever environmental condition. It is because of this wide range of adaptability that they are able to prolong their lives. According to some experts, there are also able to revert back to the previous state of growth (polyp) whenever environmental conditions do not seem to favor them.

They are able to stay in polyp stage until the environment changes into a more favorable condition. These are just some of the major survival techniques that the jellyfish have which help them last for many years under the sea.

How they do this- nobody knows. Perhaps if the secret behind it was found, humans could live forever.
