Nomenclature

Neon jellyfish are bright colored creatures and thus named so. Jellyfish are present in various sizes, shapes and colors, and neon jellyfish are perhaps the most colored and glowing ones. They are really awesome and attractive. When they are kept in aquariums, they are generally placed in a dark environment so that their colors can be brought to their full vigor.

Being discovered

It was discovered by Lisa Gershwin. She has made many discoveries, and the neon jellyfish became her 159th discovery. She works in a museum. She found this jellyfish as she was swimming near a jetty. She was surprised by the glow and color of this jellyfish.

These jellyfish have cilia. Cilia are projections like hair, and help them in locomotion. Contrary to the general belief, these jellyfish do not have any pigments to make them glow. Their light is emitted by these cilia. They make a reflection that looks like rainbow. Due to this effect, they are sometimes called rainbow jellyfish.

They are very pretty, but also very delicate. If they get caught in fishermen’s nets, they can break into pieces. They are rather small and grow only up to 13cm in length. Their tentacles are transparent and very delicate. They require a great deal of care as they are handled.

Use

Since they are very beautiful, they are commonly found in aquariums all around the world. Even in the ocean, they look miraculous in the night time water. They are easily kept in aquariums since they are easy to raise. The lifespan of these jellyfish is higher in captivity than in the ocean, so keeping them in the aquarium does not have adverse effect on their health.

Feeding habits

They feed just like other jellyfish and catch other tiny fish with their tentacles. They draw tiny fish to their gastrovascular cavity and feed on them.

These jellyfish can be seen floating in water, and sometimes they wash up on the shore during rough weather. They are quite safe to handle since they don’t sting as bad as other jellyfish. You can keep this jellyfish in your home aquarium as well as long as you take proper care of them.
