Jellyfish: Aiding Water Movement for a Better Environment
Did you know that even simple organisms such as jellyfish can make a great deal of movement under the ocean? They may also be able to contribute to the mixing of organisms living in the ocean. This is a proven by a doctoral student from the California institute of technology and the adviser named Kakani Katija and John O. Dabiri.
According to these two knowledgeable individuals, the movement of tiny organisms within the ocean does contribute greatly to the fostering and maintenance of a healthy environment for oceanic creatures whether they are large or small.
However, they also found out that most of the organisms that have significant roles in the mixing of entities in the ocean would be the tinier beings. Because of the movement of these smaller creatures, the reproduction and overall life cycle of sea animals is not deterred. This is because the nutrients from other parts of the ocean are continually flowing into the larger bodies of water. This is also distributed to other barren parts of the ocean floor.
To further prove the theory, the researchers used dyes to determine the specific path of jellyfish as it wades through the water. The researchers further said that the water movement created by the smaller organisms such as jellyfish can have the same effect as those of waves and ocean tides.
They even used a special instrument called laser velocimetry to be able to quantify water movement more effectively for further studies. This is why they were able to measure the movement of jellyfish and many other organisms under the sea.
It also has been proven that movement of creatures like jellyfish is also affected by the quality of water in the ocean floor. By quality we mean viscosity. Because of the size and shape of the jellyfish, it is easily bent by the surrounding bodies of water. Because of this, it sends ripples through the water which therefore causes movement that will ultimately cause ocean mixing.
According to the researchers, the smaller the organism is the more fluid the water movement is. Furthermore, they said that it does not apply to one specific creature alone or any other particular living organism for that matter. Mixing applies to all entities that may go through the water.
Suffice it to say that anything that can cause movement in the ocean can eventually lead to mixing no matter how large or small it is. This is why underwater creatures will continually exist and survive throughout several years because of water mixing.
In addition, because of the unique life cycle of the creature, experts can be sure that jellyfish would be able to endure for many more years to come. This means that the marine experts will still have a lot more material to use for research in the not too distant future.
