Jellyfish Tank Water Pump

Jellyfish are amongst the most fascinating creatures inhabiting the oceans of our world. They are also amongst the most fragile. More than 95% of their body is water and they are gelatinous in appearance and texture. Keeping jellyfish presents a number of problems not faced by regular fish keepers. A regular rectangular fish tank cannot be used to keep jellyfish as their corners can hurt the jellyfish or trap it. The set up required to keep jellyfish is very sophisticated and expensive as it needs to maintain the conditions of the jellyfish's natural environment.

The largest problem in keeping jellyfish captive is that of water flow in jellyfish tanks. Jellyfish live suspended in water. While jellyfish are capable of vertical motion, they are completely dependent on water tides and currents for any horizontal movement. Jellyfish also depend on the tides and current of the water to bring their food closer to their tentacles and oral arms. A jellyfish can prey upon only those creatures that flow through their tentacles. Hence, it is important for the water in a jellyfish tank to flow in a way that also keeps the food of jellyfish, gelatinous zooplanktons, suspended. Additionally, the water supply system has to be oriented in a way that it does not suck the jellyfish along with the water it is siphoning.

These are very high standards to meet, but recent technology improvements have made it possible to fulfill the requirements of a jellyfish tank. The latest technological development is the Jelliquarium that replicates as closely as possible, the natural environment of the jellyfish including water flow. The unique design employed in the Jellquarium provides laminar flow of water that keeps both the jellyfish and the zooplankton suspended in water.

Jelliquarium use Velocity brand centrifugal water pump which are known to be sealless and highly energy efficient. This water pump boasts of components like noryl housings and impeller, titanium rotor, ceramic bearing and EPDM o-ring. This water pump also has extra security measures in place. The water pump is installed in a way that makes it easy to remove and clean periodically. Any repairs, if required, can also be done with relative ease. The valve at the gate of the water pump is capable of controlling water flow. Keeping in mind that different species of jellyfish require different water conditions and that the size of the jellyfish is also a huge determinant for optimum water flow conditions, this is a very useful feature for a water pump to have.

The functions of the water pump also help to provide added security to the inhabitants of the jellyfish tank. The Jelliqurium also contains an anti-siphon trough. What this does is that it minimizes the amount of water that is siphoned back when the power is turned off. This in combination with adjustable water flow that is controlled by the water pump, and an excellent filtration system, ensure that only the debris gets siphoned out. The risk of the jellyfish being siphoned off is minimized by the unique design of the Jelliquarium.
